At Kit Out, we believe that financial constraints should never be a barrier to adventure. Whether it’s a Scout camp, a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, or any outdoor activity, everyone deserves the chance to take part. That’s why we provide high-quality equipment at minimal cost, making adventure accessible for all.

Who We Are

Kit Out is an initiative of Basingstoke East Scouts, run entirely by passionate volunteers. Our team works hard to source equipment through grants and generous donations, ensuring that young people and community groups can access the gear they need without financial worry.

How It Works

We acquire outdoor and expedition equipment—such as boots, rucksacks, sleeping bags, and waterproofs—and loan it out at a very low maintenance cost. This helps cover repairs and storage, so the kit is always ready for the next adventure.

Why It Matters

Outdoor experiences teach valuable life skills, build confidence, and create lifelong memories. But the cost of equipment can often be a challenge. Kit Out removes this barrier, making it easier for young people to learn, grow, and explore—regardless of their financial situation.

  • Kit Out is a support initiative designed to help participants and adult volunteers involved in Scouting or the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) access the essential equipment they need. It aims to remove financial barriers so that everyone can take part in these activities.

  • Kit Out is available to:

    • Participants in Scouting or DofE programs
    • Adult volunteers supporting these programs

  • Simply use our website to check the availability of the kit you'd like to borrow and book online. 

    As part of the checkout process, we will ask what Organisation you are connected to, for example your Scout Group or School.

  • Kit Out provides essential outdoor and expedition gear to help you participate fully in Scouting or DofE activities. This may include:

    • Waterproof clothing
    • Hiking boots
    • Sleeping bags
    • Rucksacks
    • Other necessary outdoor equipment

  • Yes, all kit is on a loan basis and must be returned cleaned and undamaged.

  • Whilst Kit Out exists to remove financial limitations from taking part in these activities, we do charge a small fee on average at £1 per item. This is simply to cover the costs of maintaining the kit to ensure it lasts into the future.

    If this small fee is going to be a barrier, please do reach out to us as we maybe able to help with grants to cover this.

  • Our standard kit hire is for Thursday to Tuesday. If your expedition is outside this window, please let us know. 

    You can collect your kit from our Hub in Chineham Shopping Centre and return it there after. We will provide pick up details once you've placed your order. Alternatively we offer a delivery service for a fee of £10. This includes a prepaid return label so you can send the kit back to us after.
